One Off Fireman’s Axe
My Dads 60th Birthday Present
This one was very personal for me. What do you get someone who has everything? Something one off, made by hand and unique in every way! My dad has always been into the fire service, so much so he has his own fire engine. Here’s where my inspiration came from, it truly tested all my skills and abilities.
Everything from the carving of the handle from a solid piece of oak, to hand forging the axe head from a solid lump of steel including learning all the necessary heat treatments and processes to make this axe a fully usable axe. I am more proud of this project than anything else I’ve done… so far.
The case was a last minute (how the hell do you wrap an axe) idea. Using materials I had easy access to, this was made out of pine, with some battery powered LED’s and some transparent blue resin, which turned on when the lid was opened. Simple yet effective.

Forging the Axe head
After 2 days of swinging a sedge hammer and standing next to a coke forge, with the help of my good friend Richard we managed to get a rough axe shape and a handle hole drifted. Then followed another day of heat treating, grinding and polishing. Which in the end, I feel, this axe is worthy to get a mention on here!
